Solitude Aeturnus: Alone

03/02/07  ||  Lord K Philipson

Why this band isn’t bigger is beyond me. I remember hearing them for the first time tons of years back when Candlemass mainman Leif Edling hosted a radio show here in Sweden. He was obviously a fan of the band and the band were obviously fans of Candlemass.

I eventually ended up with a few of their albums but can’t say that I kept my eyes closely on them during their career. I had a feeling these guys broke up or something since it’s been dead silent from their camp since 1999’s “Adagio”. Whatever the reasons, they are back with “Alone” (well, it’s been out for a while, but fuck it, back they are). The 8 years in between albums definitely worked in favor of these fuckers as they have managed to create a very, very solid album of doom.

What really makes Solitude Aeturnus stand out are the awesome vocals by Robert Lowe (by the way, with Robert Lowe on board of the Candlemass ship, maybe Leif can write some decent shit again?). Robert’s definitely a perfect fit when it comes to backing up those heavy-as-fuck arrangements and groovy-assed sections. Yes, SA plays doom metal with the best of them (actually there’s not much competition) and it never gets boring during the 9 tracks. The tunes reek of melancholy and sadness but oddly enough it makes me anything but depressed. They have their shit together on all accounts and it’s time the world gives SA the recognition they fucken deserve. A good review on Global Domination is definitely a good start.

There’s not much to add except a small note about the extremely good production. Everything is crystal clear and well-balanced. And the punch is there as well. Great work, guys.

Solitude Aeturnus were second to Candlemass back in the day. The tables have turned. Just listen to “Tommorow’s dead”.

8 songs that Leif Edling wishes he could write nowadays out of 10.
